Modern house design with AI

Modern House Design: Try the Massing, Plan Shape and Form with AI

What makes a house read as modern is mostly its form, not its colour: plain rectangular volumes, a flat or very shallow roof, an upper floor that steps back or overhangs, big areas of glass and very little ornament. Type a sentence describing the form you have in mind (how many storeys, how the volumes sit against each other, what the roof does, where the glass goes) and ArchitecturesAI draws an idea picture of the exterior. Try a few versions, then keep the one that points your designer in the right direction. It is not a floor plan, not to scale and not a drawing for approval.

Describe your modern house

Sign in with Google or email to render. New accounts get 2 free renders (watermarked); free renders are not available in India on this site.

A black line sketch on white paper of a modern house: a two-storey flat-roofed box on the left with a wide three-part window upstairs and a wall of glass doors below, and a lower single-storey flat-roofed box on the right with one small square window and a roof that overhangs

Before: line sketch of a two-storey box next to a one-storey box (AI-drawn stand-in for a hand sketch)

A photo-like render of the same house in smooth off-white walls with dark grey window frames, thin flat roof edges with a timber underside on the taller box, glass doors on the ground floor, a small square window on the low box, a paved path, a lawn, a fence and trees

After: the sketch drawn as a flat-roofed white house with glass doors and a paved path

Both images are AI-generated with our own image model. The sketch is an AI-drawn stand-in for a hand sketch, not a real drawing. Edit prompt used: "Turn this line sketch into a realistic photo of the same modern house: a two-storey box on the left and a lower single-storey box on the right, flat roofs with thin overhanging edges, a wide three-part window on the upper floor, a wall of glass doors on the ground floor of the tall box, a small square window on the low box, a lawn and a short paved path in front. Keep the two-box shape, the step in height, the window and door positions and the camera angle exactly the same." What followed it: the two-box shape, the step in height, the wide upstairs window, the glass doors and the small square window all stayed where the sketch put them, and the picture added dark grey frames and a thin roof edge with a timber underside. Added without being asked: a paved path, a lawn, a fence and trees, and the off-white wall finish (the sketch has no material). It shows no stairs, no roof drainage and no floor plan, and the two boxes could not be built exactly like this without a structural design.

What makes a house modern at the massing level

Before colour, siding or fixtures, a modern house is a shape. Designers usually describe it with the same few moves: simple rectangular volumes, one or two floors that are offset against each other, a flat or very low roof with a thin edge, long horizontal windows or a wall of glass, an entrance tucked under an overhang, and little decoration. The same moves can be built in brick, timber, render or concrete, so the shape matters more to the look than the surface does.

This page is about that shape. If you only want to change the colour of a wall or the siding on a house you already have, that is a different job and a different tool; here the question is what the form of the house should be.

How to design a modern house with the Generator

  1. In the editor above, the mode is Architecture Generator, the type is Residential and the style is Modern. This is the mode with a text box: there is a box labelled Prompt. You do not upload anything.
  2. Write one or two sentences about the form: the number of storeys, whether the upper floor overhangs or steps back, the shape of the plan (a single bar, an L, a courtyard), what the roof does, where the glass goes and what the plot is like.
  3. Click Generate. Free accounts can only use Low quality (Medium and High are marked PRO). Sign in with Google or email when asked. Each run gives a different picture, so run it a few times and compare.
  4. To change a result, click Edit Image on it (the box is called Edit Instructions) or use Custom Action, and say what to change and what to keep. Each edit is another render and uses credits.
  5. If you already have a photo or a sketch, choose Render Architecture or Sketch to Render in the mode list instead. That opens the full tool in that mode, where you upload the image.
  6. The three examples below ran directly on our image model, starting from an image, with the written instructions shown. They are not Generator runs from the box above, so your own results will differ.

What to put in the sentence

Things to describe, because they decide the form:

  • Storeys and offset: one floor, two floors, or an upper floor that overhangs or steps back from the lower one.
  • Plan shape: a single long bar, an L, a U around a courtyard or a compact box. The picture is an exterior view, but a plan shape in the sentence changes how the volumes meet.
  • Roof: flat with a thin edge, a shallow single slope or a flat roof with a deep overhang.
  • Glass: a corner window, a wall of glass on the garden side, a long horizontal strip.
  • Site: flat or sloping, narrow or wide, and which side is the street.

A sketch becomes a modern house

If you already know the shape you want, a quick sketch of the boxes is the fastest way to a picture. This example starts from a line sketch of two boxes of different heights.

Changing the form of an ordinary house

Two more examples start from a conventional house and change its form. In the first, the pitched roof went and the upper floor was rebuilt as a glazed volume; in the second, only the roof form changed. They show what the picture does and does not do: it redraws the whole view, and it often keeps parts you hoped it would change.

Front of an ordinary two-storey red brick house with a hipped grey shingle roof, a small white gabled porch on two posts, white-framed windows, a lawn, a concrete path and a leafy tree on the right

Before: ordinary two-storey brick house with a hipped roof (AI-drawn stand-in for a photo)

The same house with the pitched roof replaced by a flat roof with a thin white edge, the upper floor rebuilt as a white volume with a wide glazed band overhanging the entrance with a timber underside, and the brick ground floor, the porch posts, the path and the tree unchanged

After: flat roof and a glazed upper volume overhanging the entrance; brick ground floor kept

An AI-generated pair made with our own image model. The "before" is an AI-drawn stand-in for a photo of a house, not a real house. Edit prompt used: "Rebuild the form of this house as a modern house: remove the pitched roof and make two flat-roofed rectangular volumes, the upper volume overhanging the entrance, large floor-to-ceiling windows, a recessed front door under the overhang. Keep the lawn, the path, the tree and the camera angle exactly the same." What followed it: the hipped roof became a flat roof with a thin edge, and the upper floor became a white volume with a wide band of glass that overhangs the front door, with a timber underside. What differs from the prompt: only the upper floor was rebuilt. The brick ground floor, the small gabled porch on its posts and the white-framed ground-floor windows stayed as they were, so the house reads as a modern upper floor sitting on a traditional base, not as two modern volumes; the recessed front door we asked for did not appear. It also keeps the lawn, the path and the tree. We ran this one once.
Front of a single-storey tan stucco ranch house with a low brown shingle gable roof, a double garage door on the left, a white front door, two small windows, a lawn and a wide concrete driveway

Before: single-storey stucco ranch house with a garage (AI-drawn stand-in for a photo)

The same house with a flat roof with a thin edge and a deeper overhang above the entrance with a timber underside, the garage door now white with a row of glass panes, and the walls, the windows, the lawn and the driveway unchanged

After: flat roof with a deeper entrance overhang; the garage door got a glass strip

An AI-generated pair made with our own image model. The "before" is an AI-drawn stand-in for a photo of a house, not a real house. We ran this one four times: the first request (to rebuild the house as a long, low modern house with a stepped front wall) left the house almost unchanged, so we reworded it and ran it three times with different seeds. We show the first of those three results. Edit prompt used: "Replace the pitched roof of this house with a flat roof with a thin edge and a deep overhang over the entrance, and turn the garage door into a wide band of glass. Keep the lot, the lawn, the driveway, the trees and the camera angle exactly the same." What followed it: the roof is now flat with a thin edge, with a deeper overhang and a timber underside above the entrance. What differs from the prompt: the garage door became white with a row of glass panes instead of a wide band of glass, and the walls, windows and driveway are the same as before. It is a roof-form change on the same house, not a new modern house, and the picture does not show whether the old roof structure could carry a flat roof.

What the AI keeps and what it may change

Use this as a checklist when you compare a result with what you asked for.

  • Usually kept: the camera angle and the lawn stayed in all three examples above, and the front door and the ground-floor windows stayed in the two house examples.
  • Often only partly done: a modern upper floor on a traditional base (second example) or a flat roof on the same walls (third example) instead of a whole new form.
  • Often added without being asked: fences, trees, a paved path, timber soffits and changed window frames.
  • Always missing: a floor plan, dimensions, the structure that would carry an overhang or a flat roof, and roof drainage.
  • Never produced: anything an architect, an engineer or a permit office can use.

Before you plan a real modern house

A picture helps you decide what you want and brief a designer. It does not tell you whether a long overhang needs a steel beam, whether a flat roof suits your climate, or whether the plan works inside. Those come from an architect and a structural engineer, and from the local building rules for your plot (height, setbacks, roof and glazing requirements). Use the picture as the starting brief for that conversation, not as the design.

If you want to see a plan as a 3D view, or a front elevation drawn from a plan, those are separate tools linked below.

AI picture, a gallery or an architect?

  • ArchitecturesAI. Describe a form, upload a sketch or photo, get a picture back in minutes. Good for comparing massing options; not to scale and not a design for approval.
  • A gallery of built houses or a plan catalogue. Real, drawn examples to get ideas from, but they are the projects of other people on other plots.
  • An architect or building designer. Plans, structure, permit drawings and the rules for your plot. Needed before anything is built.

Free tier and plans

You need a free account to render. New accounts get 2 free renders, and free renders carry a watermark. In India this site does not include free renders, so a paid plan is needed there. Weekly, monthly and yearly plans for more renders without the watermark are on the pricing page.

The sketch and the houses on this page are AI-drawn stand-ins, not real. The examples were run directly on the model, not through the tool above, so your own render may look different. We re-ran one example (the ranch roof) with a reworded request and different seeds after the first result missed, and show one of those results; the other two examples were run once.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI design a modern house for me?

It can draw an idea picture of the outside of a modern house from a sentence, a sketch or a photo, so you can compare forms. It does not design the plan or the structure, and it is not to scale.

Can I get a floor plan from this?

No. This tool draws exterior pictures. For plans you need an architect or a plan tool; to see a plan in 3D or draw a front elevation from one, use the floor plan to 3D render or 2D plan to elevation pages linked below.

Is there a text box in the editor?

Yes, in Architecture Generator mode, which is the mode the editor above opens in. In Render Architecture and Sketch to Render you upload an image and change it afterwards with Edit Image (Edit Instructions) or Custom Action.

Why did the AI keep part of my old house?

The model redraws the whole picture and tends to keep what it can already see. In our examples the brick ground floor and the porch stayed when we asked for a modern rebuild. Say what to remove in a follow-up edit, and check the result.

Does this change my colours or siding?

This page is about form: volumes, roof, glazing and plan shape. The pictures do show a finish, because a picture needs one, but it is not the point here and the model picks it unless you say otherwise.

Can I build from the picture?

No. It has no dimensions, no structure and no drainage, and it is not a permit drawing. Give it to an architect as a brief.

Is it free to try?

Yes. After you sign in, a new account gets 2 free renders with a watermark, in Low quality. In India this site does not include free renders. Paid weekly, monthly and yearly plans are listed on the pricing page.
