Green roof design
Green Roof Design: See a Living Roof on Your Home
A green roof is a roof covered in plants: a thin carpet of sedum, a wildflower meadow or a full roof garden with planters and paths. Homeowners search for green roof designs for flat-roofed extensions, garages, sheds and modern houses. This AI green roof design tool starts from a picture: upload a photo of your roof from the street or the garden, a sketch or a clay model, and ArchitecturesAI renders it in the same view; then describe the planting, the edging and the paths in a sentence. The result is an idea picture of the outside. It is not a structural check, a planting plan or a quote.
Upload your roof photoSign in with Google or email to render. New accounts get 2 free renders (watermarked); free renders are not available in India on this site.

What a green roof is
Green roof suppliers, council guidance and the green roof galleries on Houzz describe two main kinds:
- Extensive green roofs: a thin layer of growing medium with low, tough plants such as sedum. They are light and need little care, and suit extensions, garages and sheds.
- Intensive green roofs: deeper soil with shrubs, lawns, paths and sometimes small trees. This is a roof garden and needs a stronger roof and regular care.
- Both sit on a waterproof layer, a root barrier and a drainage layer, usually on a flat or low-pitched roof.
- People choose them for wildlife, slower rainwater run-off, insulation and a better view from upstairs windows.
- A green roof adds weight, so a structural engineer should check the roof before you build.
How to try a green roof design with ArchitecturesAI
- In the editor above, the mode is Render Architecture, the type is Residential and the style is Sustainable. This mode has no prompt box: you start from an image.
- Under Select Image, upload a JPG or PNG: a daylight photo of your flat roof, extension or garage taken from the garden or the street, or a sketch or a clay model.
- Click Generate. Free accounts can only use Low quality (Medium and High are marked PRO). Sign in with Google or email when asked.
- To steer the result, click Edit Image on it (the box is called Edit Instructions) or use Custom Action, and describe the plants, the edge trim, the paths and what must stay the same and what must stay the same. Each edit is another render and uses credits. Run it a few times, since every result differs.
- The three examples below ran directly on our image model with the written instructions shown. They did not go through the editor above, so your own results will differ.
Sedum on a flat-roofed extension
A single-storey rear extension is the most common place for a green roof at home. Here the planting covered the roof and the house stayed the same.

After: a sedum green roof on the extension
A wildflower garage roof and a roof garden
A garage roof can take a meadow mix, and a modern house can take planters on a balcony or terrace. The captions note where the planting differs from a real build.

After: a roof garden and planted roof on a modern house
What the AI keeps and what it may change
- Usually kept: the camera angle, the walls, the doors and the garden.
- Often different from what you asked: how tall and dense the plants are and where planters go.
- Not shown in a picture: the waterproofing, the drainage and whether your roof can carry the weight.
- Never produced: floor plans, structure, cost estimates or approval drawings.

Free tier and plans
You need a free account to render. New accounts get 2 free renders, and free renders carry a watermark. In India this site does not include free renders, so a paid plan is needed there. Weekly, monthly and yearly plans for more renders without the watermark are on the pricing page.
The extension, the garage and the house on this page are AI-drawn stand-ins, not real. Each example was run directly on the model, not through the tool above.
Frequently asked questions
What is a green roof?
A roof covered in plants on top of a waterproof layer, a root barrier and a drainage layer. It can be a thin layer of sedum or a deeper roof garden with shrubs and paths.
Can I see a green roof on my extension or garage?
Yes, as an idea picture. Upload a photo where the roof is visible, render it, then use Edit Image to ask for sedum, wildflowers or planters. A picture cannot check the roof structure, so ask an engineer before building.
Is there a text box in the editor?
The prompt box exists only in Architecture Generator mode. The editor above opens in Render Architecture, where you upload an image and change the result with Edit Image (Edit Instructions) or Custom Action.
Is it free to try?
Yes. After you sign in, a new account gets 2 free renders with a watermark, in Low quality. In India this site does not include free renders. Paid weekly, monthly and yearly plans are listed on the pricing page.
