Two Car Garage Dimensions
A two car garage is at least 20 x 20 ft (400 sq ft), but that only fits two small cars with the doors barely opening. 24 x 24 ft (576 sq ft) is the size most designers recommend, and 24 x 30 ft or more leaves room for a workbench, storage or a full-size truck.

Two car garage door sizes
- One double door: 16 ft wide x 7 ft tall is standard. 16 x 8 ft fits lifted trucks and roof racks, and is common on custom builds.
- Two single doors: 8 x 7 ft or 9 x 7 ft each, with a post between. 9 ft doors are easier to drive through with wide vehicles.
- Leave about 2 ft of wall beside the door on each side for the door track and shelving.
How much space a car really needs
Most cars are 6 to 7 ft wide without mirrors and 15 to 20 ft long. Add about 2 1/2 to 3 ft beside each car to open doors and get out, and 3 ft in front to walk past. Two midsize SUVs (about 6.5 ft wide each) need roughly 6.5 + 6.5 + 3 x 3 = 22 ft of width for a comfortable fit, which is why 24 ft wide garages feel right.
A crew-cab pickup is about 19 to 20 ft long, so it needs a garage at least 24 ft deep, and 26 ft or more if there is a workbench at the front.
Ceiling height
A 7 ft door works with an 8 ft ceiling. An 8 ft door needs about 9 to 10 ft of ceiling for the opener and track. Storage racks hung from the ceiling need more again, and a car lift usually needs about 12 ft. Check the door and lift makers' specs before you set the wall height.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum size for a two car garage?
20 x 20 ft (400 sq ft) is the minimum. It fits two small cars, but the doors only open part way and there is no room for storage.
What is the standard size of a two car garage?
