AI dormer design

AI Dormer Design: See a Dormer on Your Own Roof

A dormer is a small upright window structure that sticks out of a sloping roof. It adds headroom and light to an attic room and changes how the whole front of the house looks. It is hard to picture a dormer from a drawing, because the size, the roof pitch and the window style all change the result. Upload a photo of the front of your house, pick the Residential type, and ArchitecturesAI renders the same view; then describe the dormer in a sentence: where it goes, what type it is, how wide it is, what it is clad in and how many windows it has. The result is an idea picture. It does not show whether your roof frame, insulation or local rules allow a dormer, so use it to brief an architect or a roofer.

Front of a single-storey cream-brick house with a plain steep grey tile roof with no dormers, white-framed windows either side of a white front door, and a green lawn

Before: cream-brick house with a plain steep roof (AI-drawn stand-in for a photo)

The same house with a gable dormer with a white-framed window set in the upper middle of the grey roof, near the ridge, with the same walls, windows, white front door and lawn

After: gable dormer with a white-framed window

Both images are AI-generated with our own image model. The "before" is an AI-drawn stand-in for a photo of a house; it is not a real house. Edit prompt used: "Change ONLY the front roof: add one gable dormer in the middle of the front roof slope, with a white-framed window and the same grey roof covering on its cheeks. Keep the walls, the windows, the front door, the lawn and the camera angle exactly the same." What followed it: a gable dormer with a white-framed window now sits on the front roof, and the walls, the two ground-floor windows, the white front door, the lawn and the camera stayed in place. What differs from the prompt: we asked for the dormer in the middle of the roof slope, but it sits high, close to the ridge, and it is a little wider than the window it holds.

What an AI dormer tool does

A dormer design tool shows an upright window structure added to your roof, so you can judge its size, its roof shape and how the front of the house looks before you ask a roofer or an architect. Some AI exterior tools work from a photo: they keep the camera and the rest of the house and redraw the roof from your description. Others work from a text prompt only, with no photo of your house. Roofing and window visualizers are built for coverings and colours, so they are less suited to adding a structure to the roof.

The examples on this page show three types: a gable dormer near the ridge, a wide shed dormer with two windows, and a small gable dormer above the upstairs centre. The tool does not know your roof frame, your attic or your local rules.

How to try a dormer on your house with ArchitecturesAI

  1. Click "Try a dormer on your house photo". The Render Architecture tool opens with Residential selected under Architecture Type. Sign in with Google or email.
  2. Under "Please select an image", click Select Image and upload a JPG or PNG of the front of the house. Use a level, daylight photo with the whole roof in frame, taken from far enough back to see the roof edge and some sky above it.
  3. Pick the Style closest to the look you want and generate. Free accounts can only use Low quality (Medium and High are marked PRO).
  4. To add the dormer, use Custom Action or Edit Image on the result and describe it in a sentence: the type (gable, shed, eyebrow or hipped), where it goes, how wide it is, the cladding, the number of windows, and what must stay the same. Each edit uses credits. Run it a few times, since each result differs.
  5. The examples on this page ran directly on our image model with the written instructions shown, not through this tool, so your result will differ.

Dormer ideas you can try

  • A gable dormer with a pitched roof, which suits Colonial, Cape Cod and Craftsman homes and adds headroom.
  • A wide shed dormer across the back or front slope, which gives the most usable floor space for a bathroom or an office.
  • An eyebrow dormer with a curved roof, which works well with a steep roof pitch and adds modest space and light.
  • A hipped dormer, which gives balanced proportions and suits Colonial and Craftsman homes.
  • Dormer windows in the same frame style and colour as the house, so the new structure looks part of the original building.

Edit prompt used: "Change ONLY the roof: add one small hipped dormer in the centre of the front roof, with a single white-framed window, matching the grey roof covering. Keep the white siding, the windows, the front door, the lawn and the camera angle exactly the same." What followed it: a small dormer with one white-framed window now sits on the front roof above the upstairs centre, and the white siding, the porch, the front door, the two upstairs windows, the lawn and the camera stayed. What differs from the prompt: we asked for a hipped dormer, but the result has a pointed gable dormer, and it sits close to the ridge rather than in the centre of the roof.

What the AI keeps and what it may change

Use this as a checklist when you compare a result with your house.

  • Usually kept: the camera angle, the walls, the front door, the lawn and most of the ground-floor windows.
  • Often different from what you asked: the dormer type (in the hipped example we got a gable), where it sits on the roof, its width, the cladding colour and the number of windows.
  • Often changed without being asked: the roof edge or ridge, a rooflight or chimney, and the glazing bars of nearby windows.
  • Never produced: the roof structure, the headroom, insulation, drainage, a materials list or a check on whether your roof can take a dormer.

Edit prompt used: "Change ONLY the front roof: add one wide flat-roofed shed dormer across the front roof slope, clad in dark grey boards, with two white windows in it. Keep the brick walls, the ground-floor windows, the front door, the lawn and the camera angle exactly the same." What followed it: the two small gable dormers were replaced by one wide flat-topped shed dormer across the roof with two white-framed windows, and the brick walls, the front door and the lawn stayed. What differs from the prompt: the dormer walls are pale, not the dark grey boards we asked for; a small rooflight appeared above it; and the two ground-floor windows changed their glazing bars. Those changes were not requested.

From the idea to a real dormer

The picture is for deciding what type and size you like and for explaining it to a professional. A dormer cuts into the roof, so it needs a structure to carry it, weatherproofing where it meets the roof, and usually insulation and a stair or floor level inside. Local planning and building rules can also limit a dormer, especially on historic or protected houses. None of that can be read from a picture. Show the image to a roofer or an architect, and ask your local authority what applies.

For a larger change to the roof covering itself, see the AI roof design page; for a second floor, see the second story addition page.

AI idea picture, a roofer or an architect?

  • ArchitecturesAI. No setup: upload a photo, describe the dormer and get a picture back. Good for comparing types and sizes; not to scale and not a structural design.
  • A roofer or a builder. Can tell you what is usual on your type of house and quote the work, but takes a visit and a wait.
  • An architect and a structural engineer. Drawings, the roof frame and the paperwork for approval. Needed before any change to the roof structure.

Free tier and plans

You need a free account to render. New accounts get 2 free renders, and free renders carry a watermark. In India this site does not include free renders, so a paid plan is needed there. Weekly, monthly and yearly plans for more renders without the watermark are on the pricing page.

The "before" images on this page are AI-drawn stand-ins, not photos of real houses.

Frequently asked questions

What is a dormer?

A dormer is a small structure with its own window that projects from a sloping roof. It adds headroom and daylight to the space inside the roof, and it changes the look of the roof from the outside. Common types are gable, shed, eyebrow and hipped.

Can AI show a dormer on my own house photo?

Yes, as a concept picture. Upload a photo of the front of your house, then describe the dormer with Custom Action or Edit Image on the result. It keeps the camera and the walls and redraws the roof as you describe it, but it is not to scale and it knows nothing about your roof frame.

What should I write to ask for a dormer?

Say the type, where it goes, its width, the cladding and the windows, and what stays the same: for example, a wide flat-roofed shed dormer across the front roof with two white windows, and keep the walls, the front door, the ground-floor windows and the camera the same. In our tests it followed the idea, but it also changed the dormer type and the roof details in some attempts.

Will the picture tell me if my roof can take a dormer?

No. Whether your roof frame, insulation and local rules allow a dormer is a question for a roofer, an architect or your planning office. The picture shows none of it.

Which dormer type suits my house?

Ask an architect for the right form for your roof pitch and your local rules.

What photo should I upload?

A level photo in daylight with the whole roof and the roof edge in frame, taken from far enough back to see some sky above it, with as little clutter as possible. Crop out text and toolbars.

Is it free to try?

Yes. After you sign in, a new account gets 2 free renders with a watermark. In India this site does not include free renders. Paid weekly, monthly and yearly plans are listed on the pricing page.
