Metal roof colors
Metal Roof Colors: See 13 Colors on a Whole House
A metal roof lasts for decades, so its color is a long decision, and a small chip from a color chart tells you little about a whole roof on your house. Here the same houses get a standing-seam metal roof in 13 colors: matte black, charcoal, burnished slate, bare galvalume, dark bronze, copper, evergreen, barn red, light stone, brown, beige, patina green and slate blue. Below them: which colors suit which siding, light versus dark and heat, and what keeps a color from fading.

Every picture on this page is one run of our own image model on an AI-drawn stand-in photo, not a real house, and not picked from several tries. Under each picture is the instruction we sent and what changed, including anything that changed that we did not ask for. Colors are approximate: check a real sample before you buy.
Matte black, burnished slate and barn red metal roof on a white cape cod with a gray shingle roof

Before
AI-drawn stand-in: a white cape cod with a gray shingle roof.

Matte black
Asked: "Replace ONLY the roof covering with a matte black standing-seam metal roof." The gray shingles were replaced with a black standing-seam roof; the vertical seams are clear. Walls, windows and the chimney unchanged.

Burnished slate
Asked: "Replace ONLY the roof covering with a burnished slate (dark brown-gray) standing-seam metal roof." The shingles became a dark brown-gray metal roof, as asked. In daylight it reads closer to brown than to gray.

Barn red
Asked: "Replace ONLY the roof covering with a barn red standing-seam metal roof." The shingles became a bright barn red standing-seam roof. A bold look against white siding.
Charcoal gray and slate blue metal roof on a white stucco bungalow with a gray tile roof

Before
AI-drawn stand-in: a white stucco bungalow with a gray tile roof.

Charcoal gray
Asked: "Replace ONLY the roof covering with a charcoal gray standing-seam metal roof." The tile roof became a charcoal standing-seam metal hip roof, porch roof included. Walls and door unchanged.

Slate blue
Asked: "Replace ONLY the roof covering with a slate blue standing-seam metal roof." The tile roof became a slate blue standing-seam metal hip roof. Walls and wood door unchanged.
Galvalume (bare silver) metal roof on a white board-and-batten cottage with a light metal roof

Before
AI-drawn stand-in: a white board-and-batten cottage with a light metal roof.

Galvalume (bare silver)
Asked: "Replace ONLY the roof covering with a bare unpainted galvalume silver standing-seam metal roof." This cottage already had a light metal roof, so the change is small: the panels are a little brighter and the seams sharper. Shown so you can see that.
Dark bronze metal roof on a red brick ranch with a gray shingle roof

Before
AI-drawn stand-in: a red brick ranch with a gray shingle roof.

Dark bronze
Asked: "Replace ONLY the roof covering with a dark bronze standing-seam metal roof." The shingles became a dark bronze standing-seam roof over the brick ranch. Brick, chimney and porch unchanged.
Copper tone metal roof on a beige stucco house with a terracotta tile roof and white shutters

Before
AI-drawn stand-in: a beige stucco house with a terracotta tile roof and white shutters.

Copper tone
Asked: "Replace ONLY the roof covering with a copper-tone standing-seam metal roof." The terracotta tiles were replaced with a copper-tone metal roof, and the small tiled canopy over the door was turned copper too.
Evergreen and mansard brown metal roof on a beige two-storey house with a porch roof between the floors

Before
AI-drawn stand-in: a beige two-storey house with a porch roof between the floors.

Evergreen
Asked: "Replace ONLY the roof covering with a deep evergreen (forest green) standing-seam metal roof." The shingles became an evergreen metal roof, including the porch roof between the floors. Siding and hedges unchanged.

Mansard brown
Asked: "Replace ONLY the roof covering with a dark mansard brown standing-seam metal roof." The shingles became a dark brown standing-seam roof, porch roof included.
Light stone (almond) metal roof on a gray two-storey house with a hip roof

Before
AI-drawn stand-in: a gray two-storey house with a hip roof.

Light stone (almond)
Asked: "Replace ONLY the roof covering with a light stone almond standing-seam metal roof." The roof became a light almond metal. It is close to the siding color, so the house looks paler overall.
Beige (tone-on-tone) metal roof on a beige two-storey house with a small porch roof

Before
AI-drawn stand-in: a beige two-storey house with a small porch roof.

Beige (tone-on-tone)
Asked: "Replace ONLY the roof covering with a beige, close to the color of the siding standing-seam metal roof." The roof became a beige metal close to the siding, for a tone-on-tone look. The porch canopy turned beige too.
Patina green metal roof on a red brick colonial with green shutters

Before
AI-drawn stand-in: a red brick colonial with green shutters.

Patina green
Asked: "Replace ONLY the roof covering with a patina green standing-seam metal roof." The shingles became a soft blue-green patina metal roof over the red brick and green shutters. Everything else unchanged.
Metal roof and siding color combinations
Most combinations that work fall into four groups. High contrast: a white or light house with a black, charcoal or dark bronze roof, the modern farmhouse look. Earth tones: tan, beige or brick under brown, bronze or copper. Coastal and cottage: white or light gray walls under light stone, slate blue or galvalume. Tone-on-tone: a roof a few shades darker than the walls in the same family, which looks calm and expensive.
| House color | Roof colors that usually work |
|---|---|
| White | Matte black, charcoal, dark bronze, barn red, galvalume |
| Cream or beige | Brown, dark bronze, evergreen, beige (tone-on-tone) |
| Red brick | Dark bronze, charcoal, black, patina green |
| Gray | Charcoal, black, galvalume, slate blue |
| Tan stucco | Copper tone, brown, dark bronze |
| Dark siding | Matte black (tone-on-tone), charcoal, galvalume |
Light or dark: what roof color does to heat
Light roof colors reflect more sunlight and stay cooler; dark colors absorb more. In hot, sunny climates a lighter or "cool roof" rated color can lower the heat that reaches the attic. In cold climates the difference matters less, and dark roofs shed snow a little faster. Many makers publish a solar reflectance number for each color, so you can compare two colors you like on that basis.
Will a metal roof color fade?
All painted metal fades slowly in sun. The paint system decides how fast: PVDF finishes (sold under names like Kynar 500) hold color longer than standard polyester paints, and the color warranty usually says how much change is allowed over how many years. Reds and bright colors tend to show fading more than neutrals. Bare galvalume is not painted, so it does not fade, but it dulls from shiny to matte silver over time.
Standing seam or metal shingles?
Standing seam has long vertical panels with raised seams and looks clean and modern; it is what every picture on this page shows. Metal shingles are stamped to look like slate, shake or tile and suit traditional houses that would look odd with seams. The color advice above applies to both.
How these pictures were made
Each picture is one run of our own render tool with the instruction "Replace ONLY the roof covering with a <color> standing-seam metal roof" and a list of what must stay the same. Captions say what changed and anything that changed that was not asked for. Colors are approximations of real metal colors; check a real sample panel in daylight before you order.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most popular metal roof color?
Black, charcoal and dark gray lead on the guides that rank for this search, followed by bronze and brown. They suit the most siding colors and hide dirt well.
What color metal roof goes with a white house?
Matte black and charcoal give the most contrast and the modern farmhouse look. Dark bronze is a warmer option, barn red is the bold one, and bare galvalume looks rural and light.
Is a light or dark metal roof better?
Light colors reflect more sun and run cooler, which helps in hot climates. Dark colors look stronger on light houses and shed snow a bit faster. Compare the solar reflectance numbers makers publish.
Does a custom metal roof color cost more?
Usually, yes. Stock colors from a maker's standard chart are the cheapest; special colors and premium paint systems cost more. Ask your supplier for the price difference.
Are these real metal roof photos?
No. The before photos are AI-drawn stand-in houses and every roof is an AI edit, so the color is close to, not the same as, a specific product.
Can I try a roof color on a photo of my own house?
Yes. Upload a straight-on photo with the whole roof in frame and describe the roof. After you sign in, a new account gets 1 free render with a watermark.
